Personalized Haircare: Is It Worth It?
Personalized haircare? I finally took the plunge and purchased my first customized haircare regimen from Function of Beauty*.
How it Works:
- Take the online quiz to determine your hair's needs and choose your hair goals (up to 5).
- Customize your shampoo and conditioner: name your formula and then choose your desired color, fragrance and size.
- Wait 10 to 14 days for your customized haircare. I ordered mine on Feb. 7, 2017 and received it on Feb. 16, 2017.

I was so excited to try this out. The mint green packaging is stunning and I love how my customized haircare plan is included along with the shampoo and conditioner. I chose the smallest size (8 oz) and paid $36, which included free shipping. As you can see, that's where my bottles are after five uses. Eight ounces is plenty for me and gives me a chance to try the haircare without committing to a larger size.
One of the first things I did was smell the formula. Right away the Grapefruit Hibiscus scent I was expecting, smelled more like bubblegum, which isn't my favorite scent. I chose a light fragrance option and I think it gives a nice off a nice scent without being overpowering. I just really wish it smelled more like grapefruit and hibiscus.
I was pleasantly surprised to find two pump dispensers included with my order. I use 10 to 11 pumps every wash because the formula comes out in small increments. The shampoo's consistency is thicker than shampoos I've used in the past, but it foams up nicely after water is added. The conditioner has a nice, smooth consistency similar to typical conditioners.
Overall Thoughts After 5 Washes Using Hair Goals
Function of Beauty is on the right track with revolutionizing haircare with its personalized plans. I am a huge fan of the brand's ingredients, which do not include sulfates, parabens and toxins. The brand also does not test on animals and the formulas are created in the USA.
In terms of my hair goals: lengthen, anti-frizz, shine, soothe scalp and thermal protection; one of the most obvious differences is the lack of frizz. The majority of the time I blow-dry my hair instead of letting it air-dry and the level of frizz is significantly less than before using my Function of Beauty haircare. Perhaps this is also because of the thermal protection properties in my Hair Goals.
My hair did grow since I'd been using the formulas for a couple of weeks, but I don't know if it was because of the haircare necessarily.
I'd been dealing with some dry scalp coming off of the winter months, and this formula has helped relieve some dryness.
As for noticing an increase in shine, my hair certainly looks healthier and shiner. I also made sure to only use one additional product on my hair (OUAI Hair Oil), so I could really see if the changes in my hair were because of Function of Beauty.
I would like the personalized haircare more if the fragrance (grapefruit hibiscus) that I had chosen actually smelled like the description. Other fragrance options: essential oils (eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, rosemary, peppermint and spearmint oils), cucumber mint and sandalwood violet (which I would try next time). I know that fragrance should not be a deal breaker, but it was a large factor to determine if I would repurchase right away or not because I'm a huge fan of OUAI Haircare and its amazing gardenia fragrance. I would also like to see a different dispensing mechanism for the bottles since I was not fond of the pump system.
I'll continue to use this shampoo and conditioner until I run out. I won't repurchase right away because I love to try new brands out. I am impressed with my personalized routine and would definitely consider repurchasing down the road.
